Kiama is the ultimate dog-friendly holiday destination
Wake up to wet noses and wagging tails by bringing your four-legged friend along on your next NSW South Coast adventure. From dog-friendly beaches to great walking trails, Kiama is the paw-fect place to take your fur baby on holidays.
Kiama’s dog-friendly beaches
If you have a water pup, Kiama has a trifecta of beaches with off-leash areas. Kiama’s dog friendly beaches are Bombo, Jones and Werri.
The middle of Bombo Beach and Werri Beach are dog friendly sections, there are signs to indicate the off-leash areas. The Southern end of Jones Beach is dog-friendly.
All three beaches are popular with surfers and there’s plenty of space for kids to play cricket and build sandcastles. Just around the southern corner of Jones’ Beach, photographers might want to spend some time at Cathedral Rocks, a spectacular rock column that juts out from the ocean. Further around is the beautiful cove known as Boneyard, a spectacular spot for a snorkel or SUP.
Kiama Coast Walk
Stretch your legs and paws along the dog-friendly Kiama Coast Walk. Tackle the 20-kilometre route over a long weekend or do one of the three sections. Your pooch will love tramping from grassy hill to sandy beach as you make your way from Minnamurra River, via Kiama, to the charming village of Gerringong.
Pooch picnics
Kiama region’s parks and reserves also make for great fur baby picnics. The best spots are Blowhole Point, Marsden Headland (by Little Blowhole), and Black Head, Gerroa.
Bombo Headland is home to a dog agility park and is a very interesting place to explore with a collection of basalt columns, a legacy of an abandoned quarry.
Fill your picnic hamper with sourdough, pastries and jam from family-owned Flour Water Salt bakery or Parfait Patisserie.
There are also off-leash play areas at Black Head Reserve, Gerringong Headland, Kaleula Head Reserve and Minnamurra Headland.
Whale watching hotspots
Thanks to its rocky coastline, there are a number of great spots to spy humpback and southern right whales. The whales migrate past the Kiama’s shores during May and November. Two of the best locations are the Minnamurra and Gerringong whale watching platforms, which are also dog off-leash areas. Time your visit just before sundown and you’re bound to meet a gamut of doggos and their friendly owners.
Dog-friendly cafes
Eat your way around Kiama’s dog-friendly cafes. Penny Whistlers has great water views, a chilled atmosphere and some of the best coffee around. At The Hungry Monkey you can sprawl across footpath picnic tables, dog at your feet, while munching on gourmet burgers.
Diggies Kiama has coastal views and serves all day brunch. Sit on the balcony to take in the ocean views with your pup.
Silica Kiama, Stone Wall Cafe, KG Cafe Kiama, Ernest Arthur, and Black Rock Cafe are all pet friendly.
Kiama’s dog-friendly accommodation
Kiama has a number of holiday parks with dog-friendly cabins and campsites. Check out Surf Beach Holiday Park, Werri Beach Holiday Park, Kendalls on the Beach Holiday Park and Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park, the latter of which also has a dog-wash. All stays must be off-season and you should call ahead to check park rules.
